The laboratory was dedicated in 1981. The picture below shows the ribbon cutting, taking place on the front steps of the building. In the middle of the picture, front row, are Dean Morrough P. O'Brien, one of the godfathers of coastal engineering (Dean Emeritus at UC Berkeley), and Dean Irwin Greenfield (College of Engineering, UD). In the back row, President Arthur Trabant, President of the University, a young looking Dr. Robert A. Dalrymple, when his hair was not white, Dr. Robert G. Dean, Dean William Gaither (College of Marine Studies), and Dr. Hsiang Wang.
Drs. Dalrymple, Dean, and Wang were the ocean engineering professors at that time. Dr. Kobayashi was just hired.
